This is not a political opinion. In 2012, a small group of political scientists at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden set out to build the most rigorous global dataset on democracy ever constructed. They called it the Varieties of Democracy Institute, or V-Dem. At the time, global democracy was near its historic peak. Their colleagues called them alarmists. The data, they said, was exaggerating the risk. Democracy was fine. The data was not exaggerating.

The free press is not a partisan issue. It is the infrastructure of democracy, and it is being dismantled, right now, in real time and in plain sight.
