Today, April 29, 2026, the United States Supreme Court completed what scholars are already calling the most consequential rollback of civil rights in a century. In a 6-3 decision in Louisiana v. Callais, the Court's conservative supermajority gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 — the last meaningful legal shield protecting Black, Latino, Native American, and Asian American voters from racially discriminatory electoral maps. Missouri Republicans, at direct instruction from †rump, have gerrymandered a Black congressman's district out of existence, put the abortion rights voters just won up for repeal, and are now trying to make sure citizens can never use the ballot initiative process to fight back again.
