The answer is not the 25th Amendment. It was never the 25th Amendment. The answer is in Article I of the Constitution, it has been there since 1787, and it is called impeachment. Congress has the power. Congress has the grounds. Congress has the obligation. What Congress does not have — what it has been conspicuously lacking — is the spine to use it. That changes when the people demand it. So let's be clear about what we're demanding, and why.

The word treason is not thrown around lightly in this article. It is the only crime specifically defined in the United States Constitution, deliberately written narrowly by the Founders to prevent it from becoming a political weapon. That precision was intentional. And it cuts both ways. When the case fits, it fits unambiguously. We begin with January 6, 2021. We do not end there.

Since January 2025, independent researchers and global democracy watchdogs have documented an unprecedented erosion of American democratic institutions — and are now asking a question the Founders never wanted asked lightly: does systematically dismantling the constitutional order constitute treason?

In 2012, a small group of political scientists at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden set out to build the most rigorous global dataset on democracy ever constructed. They called it the Varieties of Democracy Institute, or V-Dem. At the time, global democracy was near its historic peak. Their colleagues called them alarmists. The data, they said, was exaggerating the risk. Democracy was fine. The data was not exaggerating.
