Katie Phang Sues Todd Blanche and the DØJ to Force Full Epstein File Release

This morning, April 27, 2026, legal journalist and former MSNBC host Katie Phang filed a federal lawsuit against Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche in his official capacity, demanding that a court declare the DØJ in violation of the Epstein Files Transparency Act and order the full, unredacted, legally required release of every Epstein file the regime has been hiding. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The case is Katie Phang v. Todd Blanche, Case No. 1:26-CV-01417, filed April 27, 2026.
Phang argues that the DØJ's actions have directly harmed her ability to report on Epstein's network and the government's handling of the case. As a journalist who has extensively covered Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, she contends that incomplete and improperly redacted records undermine both her work and the public's right to transparency. The lawsuit emphasizes that the transparency law was explicitly intended to aid journalists and inform the public, citing congressional statements describing the legislation as a means to deliver long-demanded accountability.
The DØJ has not publicly responded to the specific claims in the complaint.
The DØJ is scrambling. And it should be.
Why This Lawsuit Is Different From Everything That Came Before
Every previous attempt to force compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act has run into the same wall: Todd Blanche controls the DØJ, and the DØJ controls the files. Congressional subpoenas have been stonewalled. Reading rooms have been used to spy on the members of Congress reviewing the files. The Inspector General opened a probe. Senator Whitehouse sent threatening letters. Rep. Raskin filed formal demands. None of it produced the files the law requires.
A civil lawsuit changes everything.
When a case is filed in federal court, a judge, not Todd Blanche, takes control of what gets produced. Civil discovery gives the plaintiff the right to compel documents, demand sworn depositions, and force compliance under penalty of contempt. Todd Blanche cannot redact his way out of a federal judge's order. He cannot classify his way around a deposition. He cannot simply declare the files released and walk away, as he has been doing for months.
Katie Phang's lawsuit asks the court to do exactly what the regime has refused to do on its own: appoint a special master to oversee compliance with the law. That means an independent officer of the court — with no loyalty to Trump, no conflict of interest, and no career ambition dependent on protecting the powerful — watching over every document the DØJ produces.
This is the crack in the dam.
What the Complaint Reveals About the Cover-Up
The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court, is devastating in its specificity. It does not speak in generalities. It names the specific violations, the specific redactions, and the specific evidence of a cover-up that is ongoing and brazen.
The complaint, confirmed by MSN's reporting on the filing, alleges a clear pattern of misconduct by the DØJ including missing statutory deadlines for document production, improper or excessive redactions, failure to explain redactions as required by law, and withholding or retracting key documents after release. The law narrowly limits when information can be withheld — primarily to protect victims' identities, national security, or active investigations — yet the DØJ has used redactions far beyond those legal limits.
A significant portion of the lawsuit centers specifically on documents referencing President Donald Trump. Phang alleges that the DØJ failed to produce documents known to exist from prior proceedings, retracted materials that had already been publicly released, and redacted references to Trump without any lawful basis. The complaint specifically highlights interviews and investigative notes involving individuals who accused Trump of misconduct, the very files the DØJ has been burying since the day the Transparency Act was signed.
The December 19, 2025 statutory deadline passed with only a fraction of the expected materials disclosed. The law required full release within 30 days of enactment. It has now been over 150 days. The DØJ has declared itself compliant. A federal judge will now decide whether that is true.
The identities of people who allegedly conspired with Epstein to persuade, induce, and entice individuals under the age of 18 to engage in prostitution, people named in a draft federal indictment that was buried.
The identity of the person who wrote to Epstein in 2014: "Thank you for a fun night... Your littlest girl was a little naughty."
The identity of the person who wrote to Epstein in 2017: "I met [REDACTED] today. She is like Lolita from Nabokov, femme miniature... So now I should send you her type of candidates only?"
The identity of the person who wrote to Epstein in 2018: "I found at least 3 very good young poor but we was so tired" and "Meet this one, not the beauty queen but we both likes her a lot."
The identity of the person who wrote to Epstein in 2013: "New Brazilian just arrived, sexy and cute, 19yo."
The identity of the person to whom Epstein wrote in 2009: "where are you? are you ok I loved the torture video."
Read those again. These are not administrative emails. These are not routine government communications. These are messages between Jeffrey Epstein and people who were actively procuring children and young women for sexual abuse, people whose identities Todd Blanche, Trump's former personal criminal defense attorney, has decided the American public does not need to know.
Why? Who are these people? What are their names? What is their relationship to the regime that is hiding them?
The complaint also documents the DØJ's catastrophic failures in the other direction. Rather than protecting victims, the DØJ released dozens of photos of nude young women and girls. At least 43 victims' names were revealed, including more than two dozen who had been abused as minors. Some victims' names appeared over 100 times. Lawyers representing those victims called it "the single most egregious violation of victim privacy in one day in United States history."
Let that sink in. The same DØJ that is hiding the identities of Epstein's alleged co-conspirators managed to expose the identities of his victims. They protected the perpetrators and burned the survivors. That is not an accident. That is a policy.
What the Lawsuit Demands
Katie Phang's complaint asks the court for five specific forms of relief:
First: A declaration that Todd Blanche has failed to comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. A federal judge putting that in writing would be devastating for the regime's narrative that they have fulfilled the law.
Second: An injunction ordering Blanche to remove all unlawful redactions, explain the basis for any remaining redactions, re-produce all materials that were produced and then unlawfully retracted, and produce all materials that have not yet been released but are legally required to be.
Third: The appointment of a special master to oversee compliance. This is the most powerful element of the entire lawsuit. A special master is an independent judicial officer who reports directly to the court, not to the DØJ. Blanche would have no power over them. Trump would have no power over them. The files would be produced under judicial supervision, the one mechanism the regime cannot corrupt.
Fourth: Attorneys fees and costs.
Fifth: A jury trial.
The plaintiff demands a jury trial. Think about what that means. If this case goes to trial, twelve ordinary Americans will sit in a courtroom and hear testimony, under oath, about what the DØJ has been hiding and why. Todd Blanche may be required to testify. DØJ officials may be required to testify. Documents that have never seen the light of day may be entered into evidence.
This is what †rump has been trying to prevent with every war, every tariff, every distraction, every manufactured crisis since the Epstein files became a threat to him.
